Beyond Corn Trading in Masamba: Perspective of an Operator

By Mefa Yuri - 03 Nov. 2022

Masamba is one of the large agricultural areas in North Luwu. Various commodities are there, one of which is corn. Masamba and its surroundings are one of the large corn-producing areas. There are tens of thousands of tons of corn that can be produced annually in the area. There are farmers, it is certain that there are buyers of corn. Indotani is one of the many buyers in Masamba. Indotani does not only buy corn from program farmers but also from non-program farmers.

In buying and selling activities carried out by Indotani, there are various challenges that are often faced. Farmers in Masamba generally sell their corn dry, but it is not uncommon to find farmers selling their corn wet. When they want to sell it wet, the price of the corn they get will be cheaper, because the buyer has to pay for drying the corn. The main problem when trying to do a drying program is the weather.

The weather in Masamba City is not like Indonesian weather in general. In Masamba itself, it cannot be predicted when the rainy season will come and when it will be summer. The weather in Masamba generally changes every year, this year it could be April to August the rainy season while the following year it could be April to August is the summer. This is of course a difficulty for farmers because there is no good weather prediction in this city and this affects the level of sales of wet corn by farmers in certain months.

When someone decides to buy corn, of course, the corn will be sent to several feedmills in Makassar. Indotani is also like that, but the problem when buying wet corn like the one above is that it can't be sent directly to the Feedmill. The distance between Masamba City and Makassar City takes approximately 12 hours.

With that time it was not possible to send wet corn because of course the corn would be moldy when it arrived, not to mention when the corn transport trucks had to queue when they arrived at the Feedmill. Things like this are a particular difficulty when a company wants to buy wet corn. Unpredictable weather and long distances.

Apart from the weather and distance, the most common obstacle when buying corn is the price. The prices circulating in Masamba are quite varied. These varied prices were created because of several fraudulent corn buyers. Buyers like this generally cut the weight of the farmer's corn or even play with the original corn content owned by the farmer so that the total paid to the farmer is less. It is very unlikely that the prices in the regions will vary if the target feedmill is the same. Several times Indotani disseminated information about tricks done by fraudulent buyers to trick them, but only a few farmers understood. In fact, it is not uncommon for farmers to admit that they have no problem being cheated on the weight of their corn as long as they get the highest price per kg.

The above constraints did not become a barrier to the establishment of Indotani in Masamba. The presence of Indotani in Masamba aims to help farmers succeed and keep farmers away from fraudulent buyers. Indotani will always provide the best price to farmers without reducing the weight and original grade of the farmers' corn. There are already many program farmers who feel how the amount of money they get from the sale is far more important than just getting the high price per kg offered by fraudulent buyers.
